Boat Owner Checklist Before You Hit the Water This Summer

Boat Owner Checklist Before You Hit the Water This Summer

It’s Lake Season — Don’t Skip the Basics

After a long offseason, it’s easy to forget the small things when you’re excited to get back on the water.

But the truth is…
most “bad lake days” start with something simple that was overlooked.

Before you launch this summer, run through this quick checklist to make sure you’re fully ready to go.

1. Check the Weather Forecast

This should always be your first step.

  • Wind can completely change your surf conditions
  • Storms can roll in quickly (especially in Texas)
  • Rough water = not a fun day

Always check before you leave, not just the night before.

2. Fill Up on Gas

Nothing kills the vibe faster than heading back early because you’re low on fuel.

  • Fill up before heading to the lake
  • Plan for extra usage if you’re surfing all day
  • Don’t forget — wake boats burn more fuel than you think

And remember… premium fuel only

3. Load the Cooler (Ice + Drinks)

Seems obvious… but it gets forgotten all the time.

  • Ice
  • Water
  • Drinks/snacks

Pro tip: Bring more ice than you think you need.

4. Put the Drain Plug In

Yes… it still happens

Before launching:

  • Double check the plug is in
  • Make it part of your routine every time

This one mistake can ruin your entire day instantly.

5. Make Sure the Boat Goes Into Gear

Before leaving the dock or ramp:

  • Start the engine
  • Shift into forward and reverse

Catching an issue early is way better than drifting at the ramp.

6. Safety Gear Check

Quick but important:

  • Life jackets (enough for everyone)
  • Throw cushion
  • Fire extinguisher

Especially important if you have guests onboard.

7. Boards, Ropes & Essentials

Don’t forget the fun stuff:

  • Surfboards / wakeboards
  • Tow ropes
  • Handles
  • Towels
  • Sunscreen

You don’t want to be “that boat” borrowing gear all day.

8. Quick Walkaround Check

Before you go:

  • Check battery is good
  • Look for anything loose
  • Make sure everything is secured

Takes 30 seconds, saves a lot of headaches.

Final Reminder

A great lake day starts before you even leave your driveway.

Taking 5–10 minutes to run through this checklist can be the difference between:
a perfect day on the water
or heading back early with a problem
